Stabilizing Infrastructure & Migrating to AWS RDS at Symits
The Challenge
Joining Symits as the sole DevOps resource meant infrastructure had grown organically without dedicated ownership — no CI/CD pipelines, inconsistent deployment processes, and database workloads running in a configuration that limited performance and reliability.
What I Did
I started by auditing the existing infrastructure to identify the highest-risk gaps, then worked through them systematically:
- Implemented CI/CD pipelines from scratch, replacing manual deployment steps with automated build, test, and release workflows
- Planned and executed a migration of critical workloads to AWS RDS, focused on a zero-downtime cutover to avoid disrupting production traffic
- Introduced monitoring and alerting so infrastructure issues were caught before they became incidents
- Drove cost optimization initiatives across the AWS footprint alongside the stabilization work
The Result
The RDS migration improved database performance and reliability, and the new CI/CD pipelines cut deployment friction for the engineering team. Infrastructure that previously had no dedicated owner became stable, monitored, and cost-efficient — all while I was the only DevOps engineer on staff.
